Ratnadurg Fort is one of the most popular forts in Maharashtra. It is located 4 Kilometres away from the Ratnagiri Bus Station and is located on the shores of the Arabian Sea. The fort has a rich history, being a centre of conflict for several dynasties.


The fort was constructed during the Bahamani Sultanate. It was captured by Adilshah and then by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1670 CE. The fort was under the control of Kanhoji Angre, and later in the hands of Peshwas. The fort was captured by the British in 1818.


The fort is spread over an area of 120 acres, with 1300 metres in length and 1000 metres in width. The fort is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on all three sides. The fort is divided into three parts - Balekilla, the upper fort, the middle Peth fort and Parkot. The Parkot has a lighthouse and the Peth Fort is in ruins.


The fort has several bastions and a few parts of the wall are still intact. A beautiful temple dedicated to Goddess Bhagawati is located in the middle of the fort. An abandoned jetty is located on the left side of the fort. The best time to visit the fort is during monsoons.


2. Purnagad Fort

Purnagad Fort is located 24 Kilometres from Ratnagiri and 10 Kilometres from Ganeshgule. It is one of the best forts in Ratnagiri. The fort is situated on a mountain at the confluence point of the Arabian Sea and Muchkundi Creek. The fort was built by Maratha Admiral Kanhoji Angre.


When you will enter the fort, the entrance will not be immediately visible. The main door is a strong structure made up of laterite rocks. It has the image of the sun, moon and Lord Ganesh engraved into it. There are small secret holes on the fort walls from where cannonballs were fired.


A hanuman temple is located near the fort. You can also enjoy the view of the sea from the fort. The fort is situated near Purnagad village and the fort is a 10-minute walk from there. You can enjoy the view of the sea from the fort.


3. Jaigad Fort

Jaigad Fort is one of the famous forts in Maharashtra and is located near Jaigad Village. It is 42 kilometres from Ratnagiri and 19 kilometres from Ganpatipule. The construction of the fort started in the 14th century and was completed under the Sultan of Bijapur.


The fort was captured by Kanhoji Angre during the reign of Shivaji Maharaj. The fort later came under the control of the Peshwas and then the British in 1818. The fort has played an important role in the history of the region.


The Jaigad Creek is a merging point between the Arabian Sea and river Shashtri. The fort was constructed to protect that area. The small door along the main entrance leads directly to the Jaigad Harbour.


There are rooms on the left side of the fort when you enter. There are also stone steps which lead to the coast with spacious ground. Further up, there is a Ganesh temple and a two-storied rest house built by the British. There are also two dipmalas i.e lamp towers covered in stone.


The fort is surrounded by the moat that acted as a protector. The main fort consists of 14 bastions while the pavement consists of 10 bastions. It is one of the best places to visit in Ratnagiri.
